Short, practical pieces on hours, overtime and getting people paid right — written for the people who open the store, clock the shift and sign the checks.
Federal overtime is measured per workweek: a fixed, recurring block of seven consecutive 24-hour days that you define and then leave alone. Non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for every hour over 40 inside that workweek.
Most small teams still enter payroll into RUN check by check. RUN has an import path — Payroll → Import Paydata — that takes a single file with the period totals for every employee.
The classic setup is three ledgers: the clock export, the payroll spreadsheet and the accountant’s book. Each one is edited by a different person on a different day, so reconciling turns into archaeology.
More notes as we ship. Want one on a specific corner of payroll? Ask for it.
